Summary

W.W. Gordon Elementary is a PK–5 school in North Chesterfield, VA, serving 628 students in Chesterfield County Public Schools. This school has become a true standout, earning a 5-star rating for 2025–2026 and ranking #42 out of 1,111 elementary schools statewide — the top 4% in Virginia. Its ranking has climbed steadily from the high-70s percentile in 2018–2019 to the mid-90s in the last two years, showing not just consistent strength but recent, impressive improvement.

Academically, Gordon's SOL proficiency rates are exceptional, beating its district by 20–26 percentage points in most subjects. For example, 4th grade math hits 96.3% and 4th grade reading 95.3%, while even its "weakest" area — 3rd grade reading at 81.8% — remains 15 points above the district average. Compared to nearby schools, Gordon leads the pack in nearly every test, with J.B. Watkins Elementary as its closest rival. Gordon also posts remarkably low chronic absenteeism at 9.3%, far below the district's 16.1% and most neighbors like Reams Road (16.4%) or Thelma Crenshaw (17.2%). This strong attendance culture is a key ingredient in its success.

What makes Gordon even more notable is that it achieves these results with lower spending ($7,411 per student) and larger class sizes than many nearby schools that spend thousands more yet rank far lower, such as Providence or A.M. Davis. Gordon also performs well across student subgroups, including top-15% rankings statewide for low-income and disabled students. While it serves a more advantaged population than some neighbors, its own lower-income students still rank in the 87th percentile. The bottom line: W.W. Gordon is one of the most effective elementary schools in the area, combining elite academics, superb attendance, and strong outcomes for all students.

Open Quote We have absolutely LOVED Gordon elementary school! My son started Kindergarten there for the 2016-17 school year. While he excelled academically, his maturity level and attention span was a different story. His teacher was absolutely incredible and very patiently worked with me to develop a plan to help him improve. He flourished under her care and has an even greater love of learning than when he began school.
The administrative staff was wonderful to work with and have always been so patient and communicative! We love being Gordon Patriots and members of this wonderful community! Close Quote

Open Quote Staff held my child after school until 5:00 without parental consent for SOL testing!! Gave no notification in advance and forced me to leave work early in order to make it in time to pick him up! Very selfish minded administration- could have cost me my job and 4th graders should not be testing from 1:30-5:00!! To say outraged would be an understatement! Close Quote
