Summary

Thelma Crenshaw Elementary is a PK–5 school in Midlothian, VA, serving 708 students within Chesterfield County Public Schools, where roughly 78% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school's overall state ranking has hovered in the lower-middle tier of Virginia elementary schools for the past decade, landing in the 31st percentile (768th out of 1,111 schools) and earning 2 stars in 2025–2026. With a student-teacher ratio of 13.7:1 and per-pupil spending of $8,087, the school invests more in staffing and funding than several higher-performing nearby schools.

Academically, the school shows a striking grade-level split. In 2025–2026, 5th graders outperformed state averages in every subject—math (79.1% vs. 72.4%), reading (78.1% vs. 72.4%), and science (76.2% vs. 68.8%). However, 3rd and 4th graders significantly lagged state averages, with 4th-grade reading at 59.8% and Virginia Studies at just 51.2% versus 70.5% statewide. Third-grade reading proficiency has remained stubbornly low for years, suggesting that too many students reach 3rd grade without foundational reading skills. Chronic absenteeism is another concern, affecting 17.2% of students—the highest rate among nearby schools and above both the district (16.1%) and state (14.8%) averages.

Comparisons to nearby schools reveal both challenges and opportunities. Woolridge Elementary (94th percentile) and W.W. Gordon Elementary (96th percentile) post elite results with far lower poverty rates. More instructive is Alberta Smith Elementary, which serves a nearly identical student population (76.8% poverty) yet ranks in the 87th percentile statewide, proving that demographics are not destiny. Among nearby high-poverty schools, Thelma Crenshaw ranks below Reams Road Elementary (37th percentile) and Evergreen Elementary (40th percentile), while only Providence Elementary (20th percentile) ranks lower. One bright spot: English Learner students at Thelma Crenshaw ranked in the 90th percentile statewide in 2023–2024, earning 5 stars. However, outcomes for students with disabilities ranked in the 2nd percentile, signaling a critical area for improvement.

Open Quote My son's first year of school was a wonderful experience due to the amazing teaching staff and new Principal Ms Williams. Thanks to the nurturing environment my son has left Kindergarten loving school and looking forward to the next year. Any school can be great or terrible and it all just really depends on the staff that run it. I have ben very happy with all of the staff I have had dealings with and their willingness to help and encouage the children. Close Quote
