Summary

Juab Junior High in Nephi, Utah, is a public school serving 629 students in grades 6–8 and is part of the comparatively strong Juab District. The school has a three-star rating and currently ranks in the 42nd percentile statewide, an improvement from the 17th percentile in 2022–2023. Its surrounding community is served by a district ranked 38th of 92 Utah districts, giving Juab a stronger district context than nearby North Sanpete Middle in Moroni.

Recent academic results show clear strengths but also substantial differences by grade. Seventh grade is Juab’s strongest overall comparison point: the school exceeded North Sanpete in English Language Arts, mathematics, and science, including a 48.3% ELA proficiency rate versus 34.4% at North Sanpete. Eighth-grade mathematics was another bright spot, with 42.0% proficiency compared with 32.5% at North Sanpete and 39.3% statewide. Sixth-grade science was especially strong at 68.5%, above Utah’s 58.2% average. However, sixth-grade mathematics remained a concern at 21.2%, well below the state’s 37.4%, while eighth-grade science was Juab’s largest weakness at 27.5%, compared with 62.3% at North Sanpete. Eighth-grade ELA was also below the state average.

The school’s upward ranking trend is encouraging, with notable recent gains in seventh-grade math and science, eighth-grade math, and sixth- and seventh-grade ELA. Still, chronic absenteeism was 24.8% in 2024–2025, slightly above the state rate and well above the Juab District rate of 14.5%. Juab also had a higher student-teacher ratio than North Sanpete—20.9 versus 17.1—which may make individualized support more difficult. Its low-SES subgroup ranked in the 64th percentile statewide, suggesting a relative strength in serving economically disadvantaged students. Overall, Juab shows meaningful momentum, but sustained improvement will depend on addressing attendance, sixth-grade math, and eighth-grade science.
