Summary

Valley Junior High is a public school serving 546 students in grades 7–8 in West Valley City, an urban area of the Granite District. The school serves a relatively high-need community: 63.19% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25, and 33.0% were chronically absent. Valley’s 2025–26 statewide ranking was 208th out of 217 schools, in the 4th percentile, continuing a long pattern of performance near the bottom of the state rather than representing a one-year decline.

Recent academic results were below both district and state averages. Across grades 7 and 8, about 23.6% of students were proficient in English language arts, 22.1% in mathematics, and 27.0% in science. Grade 8 was weaker than grade 7 in all three subjects, especially mathematics. However, Valley is not the lowest-performing nearby school in every area. Its mathematics results were higher than those at Kearns Junior High, John F. Kennedy Junior High, and West Lake Junior High. Its science results also narrowly exceeded those at Kennedy and West Lake. Grade 7 mathematics, at 24.6% proficient, is a potential internal strength to build on.

Attendance and student support appear to be important improvement priorities. Valley’s chronic absenteeism was higher than the Utah rate of 23.8% and above several nearby schools, although Hillcrest Junior High had slightly higher absenteeism while achieving much stronger academic results. The nearby Riverview Junior High also substantially outperformed Valley and had far lower absenteeism. Valley’s English Language Learner subgroup was a notable relative strength, ranking in the 46th percentile statewide, while results for students receiving special education services and students from low-income households were much weaker. Overall, the clearest needs are stronger grade 8 instruction, improved ELA and science outcomes, attendance support, and focused services for students requiring additional academic help.
