Summary

Pioneer School is a public elementary school in West Valley City serving 438 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade as part of Granite District. For 2025–2026, it ranked 479th of 563 Utah elementary schools, placing it in the 15th percentile statewide and earning a one-star rating. However, its local standing is stronger than that rating alone suggests: it ranks fourth among 11 nearby schools with current rankings, ahead of Jackling School, Arcadia School, Philo T. Farnsworth School, Hillsdale School, and several others.

The school’s long-term direction is encouraging. Its statewide ranking improved from the 1st percentile in 2015–2016 to the 15th percentile currently, although it has leveled off somewhat after reaching the 18th percentile in 2023–2024. A clear academic bright spot is third-grade mathematics: 39.6% of students were proficient, above the district’s 35.8% and higher than every nearby comparison school listed. That remains above both the district’s 30.6% and Utah’s 23.8%, so continued attendance efforts could support more consistent learning. Staffing is broadly similar to nearby schools, with 22.4 students per teacher, and older spending data places Pioneer near the middle of the local group. One notable strength is the school’s performance with students from low-income households, whose subgroup ranking reached the 55th percentile in 2024–2025, well above the school’s overall ranking. Overall, Pioneer appears to be improving over time and is stronger than most nearby schools, with the greatest opportunities in fourth-grade achievement, science, schoolwide ELA, and attendance.
