West Lake Junior High is a public school in West Valley City serving 724 students in grades 7–8, in a relatively high-need area within the Granite District.

The most important concern is academic performance, especially mathematics. In 2025–2026, proficiency was 23.7% in seventh-grade ELA, 30.1% in eighth-grade ELA, 10% in seventh-grade math, 15.1% in eighth-grade math, and between 26.4% and 28.5% in science. These results were below both district and Utah averages, and the school ranked 207th of 217 Utah schools, in the 5th percentile. Compared with nearby Bennion Junior High, West Lake had notably lower results in every tested subject. Riverview Junior High also performed substantially better, particularly in math. However, West Lake is part of a broader group of lower-performing nearby schools: results were mixed against Valley Junior High, John F. Kennedy Junior High, and Kearns Junior High.

There are encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism fell sharply from 47.3% in 2022–2023 to 26.1% in 2024–2025, better than most nearby Granite District schools, including Hunter Junior High and Granite Park Junior High. Eighth-grade ELA and science are relative strengths, and English language learners are the school’s strongest-performing subgroup compared with statewide peers. For families, the clearest priorities are intensive math support, foundational skill recovery, continued attendance efforts, and targeted help for students from low-income households and students receiving special education services.
