Summary

J. L. Mann High Academy is a large public high school in Greenville, SC, serving approximately 2,013 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Greenville 01 school district. The school has earned a solid reputation over the past decade, consistently receiving 4-star ratings and ranking in the 75th-81st percentile statewide since 2020.

J. L. Mann's most reliable academic strength is English Language Arts. In 2025-2026, English 2 proficiency reached 87.71%, outperforming both the district (84.52%) and state (83.79%) averages. The school also shows strong support for its students, with graduation rates climbing from 85.9% in 2021-2022 to 92.5% in 2024-2025—now exceeding both district and state averages. When compared to nearby Mauldin High, J. L. Mann has a slightly lower student-teacher ratio (18.6 vs. 19.3) and comparable English proficiency, though Mauldin edges ahead in overall ranking (87th vs. 81st percentile) and graduation rate (96.2%). Against Greenville Senior High Academy, J. L. Mann ranks higher overall and shows stronger English 2 proficiency, while Southside High trails significantly across nearly all metrics.

The school's primary challenge is chronic absenteeism, with a 33.0% rate that is nearly 50% higher than the district average of 22.5%. This has remained stubbornly high for three consecutive years. Additionally, Algebra 1 proficiency dropped dramatically from 75.76% in 2024-2025 to 54.55% in 2025-2026, falling below both district and state averages—a stark contrast to the stability seen in English. At $12,198 per student, spending is nearly identical to Greenville Senior High but achieves better outcomes, suggesting efficient resource use. While the school has plateaued since its 5-star performance in 2015-2016, its improving graduation rate and strong English program provide a solid foundation for addressing these challenges.
