Summary

Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle is a public middle school in Greenville, SC, serving 930 students in grades 6-8 within the highly rated Greenville 01 school district, which holds a 4-star rating and ranks 11th out of 75 districts statewide.

What truly sets Fisher Middle apart is its remarkable success with every group of students. In the most recent school year, the school ranked in the 91st percentile for White students, the 88th percentile for African American students, and the 86th percentile for Hispanic students—all well above state averages. Even more impressive, Fisher Middle ranked 2nd out of 105 schools in South Carolina for English Language Learners, placing it in the 98th percentile, and it also ranks in the 91st percentile for students with disabilities. This means your child will likely find strong, targeted support no matter their background or learning needs. The school also shines in advanced math: 99.12% of 8th graders passed the Algebra 1 end-of-course exam, far exceeding the district average of 85.64% and the state average of 73.95%. When compared to nearby Beck International Academy, which has a similar overall ranking, Fisher Middle has a significantly lower chronic absenteeism rate (18.6% vs. 24.2%), suggesting a stronger culture of attendance and engagement.

While the school is a standout, there is one area for growth: foundational math skills in 6th and 8th grades on the SC READY exam are slightly mixed, with 6th-grade math proficiency (46.1%) just below the district average. However, the school's overall trajectory is positive—its state ranking has climbed from the 72nd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 81st percentile in 2025-2026. Fisher Middle also achieves these results efficiently, spending about $11,629 per student, which is less than comparable schools like Greenville Middle Academy ($13,011) and Beck International Academy ($12,773). For a large, diverse public school that delivers strong results across the board, Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle is an excellent choice in the Greenville area.

Open Quote Have had a terrible experience with racism for being white. My daughter was called a cracker, white privileged and threatened every day. She can't hear the teachers from students talking. Teachers have no control. Students vaping in the hallways and skipping classes roaming around the school. Can't get teachers to reply to an email or help her with her needs. Terrible school.
