River Grove Elementary School is a K–5 school of 382 students in the Lake Oswego School District 7J, a Portland-area district ranked 2nd of 141 statewide, and it placed 55th of 709 Oregon elementary schools in 2025–2026 (92nd percentile, 5 stars).

By state standards that is a strong result, but the school's own ten-year history puts it below its former norm: it ranked 10th statewide in 2015–16 and sat in the low 20s as recently as 2023–24, slipped to 79th in 2024–25, then recovered only partway. On 2025–26 all-grades OSAS results, River Grove beat Oregon averages by wide margins — about 25 points higher in English language arts, 29 in math, and 21 in science — yet trailed its own district in all three subjects. It is the lowest-performing of the four Lake Oswego elementaries nearby, roughly 4 points behind Lake Grove Elementary School and 20–27 points behind Westridge Elementary School and Palisades World Language School, both 1.3–2.3 miles away. The closest neighbor tells a different story: Bridgeport Elementary School, 0.78 miles away in the Tigard-Tualatin School District 23J, posts roughly 20 points lower in ELA and 25 lower in math. River Grove also has the highest per-pupil spending ($21,841) and the smallest student-teacher ratio (13.8:1) in the comparison set, and it serves a more economically diverse population than its Lake Oswego peers.

First, the school's subgroup results are strongest where students often struggle most: special education students rank 22nd of 355 schools (94th percentile) and low-income students 32nd of 521 (94th percentile), while its gifted and advanced learners rank around the middle of the state. Second, chronic absenteeism improved from 27.3% in 2022–23 to 17.1% in 2024–25, now better than the district's 18.1%, though still above Westridge and Palisades. The clearest concrete weakness is 5th-grade math (50.6%) and science (51.9%), against district figures of 69.6% and 62.9%.
