Summary:

Salem, Oregon has 58 schools — 38 elementary, 11 middle, 8 high, and 1 alternative — serving roughly 32,067 students, most of them in Salem-Keizer School District 24J, which ranks 105th of 141 Oregon districts (about the 26th percentile, 1 star). Three exceptions report elsewhere: Eagle Charter School and Oregon School for the Deaf fall under the Oregon Department of Education (13th of 141, 5 stars), Pratum Elementary School is in Silver Falls School District 4J (28th of 141, 4 stars), and Chemawa Indian School has its own district with very limited academic data. Citywide medians are about 33.2% in ELA, 23.4% in math, and 19% in science, with roughly 37.0% chronic absenteeism — below the state in every tested subject and above it for absenteeism.

Standouts include Early College High School (89.7% ELA, 74.4% math, 100% graduation), Pratum Elementary School (76.1% ELA), Eagle Charter School (69.3% ELA), Howard Street Charter (66.9% ELA, only 6.2% chronic absenteeism), Candalaria Elementary School (66.4%), Morningside Elementary School (60.1%), and Jane Goodall Environmental Middle Charter School (57.7% ELA, 59.4% science despite a 96.84% free/reduced lunch rate). West Salem High School is the strongest traditional comprehensive high school (46.3% ELA, 94.4% graduation) and is trending upward.

At the other end, Roberts High School (13.3% ELA, 17.1% graduation, 78.0% chronic absenteeism), North Salem High School (24.8% ELA), and McKay High School (29.6% ELA) trail peers, as do middle schools Houck, Waldo, and Stephens. Science is the weakest subject, with Hallman Elementary School and Eyre Elementary School under 5%. High absenteeism closely tracks low achievement, yet most comprehensive high schools still meet or exceed the state graduation rate.
