Straub Middle School is a grades 6–8 school at 1920 Wilmington Ave NW in west Salem, Oregon, serving 568 students as part of Salem-Keizer School District 24J. For 2025-26 it ranks 128th of 371 Oregon middle schools (65th percentile, 3 stars) — a solid mid-to-upper result that is well above its own district, which sits at 105th of 141 districts statewide (26th percentile).

Straub's proficiency is 45.0% in English language arts, 36.8% in math and 27.3% in science. It beats district averages in all three subjects, and the ELA and math margins are double-digit — roughly 10 to 13 points. It is above the state in ELA and math but below the state in science, its one weak spot. Math is the standout: 8th-grade math at 41.1% is 11.1 points above the state. The closest comparison is Walker Middle School, about 1.3 miles away with nearly identical enrollment (571) and similar test results — but Straub's chronic absenteeism of 31.1% is better than Walker's 35.7%, about 12 points better than the district, and second-lowest among the traditional district middle schools behind only Whiteaker Middle School.

Two things are worth watching. First, Straub has slid over the long term, from the 82nd–87th percentile in the mid-2010s to the mid-60s today, though the last three years (63 → 69 → 65) look like stabilization rather than further decline. Second, results are uneven inside the school: special education students rank in the 25th percentile and have declined three years running, and students from lower-income families rank in the 34th percentile — well below the school's overall 65th percentile. Science and 6th-grade ELA also fall just below state averages. Families should note that Straub's spending is among the highest in its peer group, and it serves a student population very similar to nearby schools — it is not posting these results because it has an easier student body.
