Summary

Columbia Elementary School is a PK–5 school serving 244 students at 150 Columbus Rd in Mount Vernon, Ohio, one of six elementary schools in the Mount Vernon City district in Knox County. For 2025–26, Columbia ranks 415th of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools — the 73rd percentile, a 4-star rating, and its highest star rating in four years.

Columbia's standout strength is attendance: at 6.4% chronically absent, it has the lowest rate of any school compared here, well under its district's 16.1% and below Wiggin Street (9.1%), East (10.9%) and Dan Emmett (18.5%). On 2025–26 state tests, Columbia beat the state average in six of seven tested subjects, with especially wide math margins, and its composite of 78.1% sits essentially level with its district (79.0%). Yet within its own competitive district it lands mid-pack — 1st of six in 3rd-grade math, but behind Wiggin Street, East and Twin Oak overall. Notably, it does this with the highest student–teacher ratio (18.9) of all eleven schools compared, including Centerburg (15.2) and Dan Emmett (15.4).

Two areas deserve attention. Fourth-grade ELA is the school's clear weak spot: 60.5% proficient, the only tested subject below the state average, last among the six district elementaries, and declining three years running (65.9 → 64.9 → 60.5). Fifth-grade science is also last in the district. On the positive side, Columbia's low-income students rank in the 92nd percentile statewide (5 stars) — 19 points above the school's overall rank, a strong equity signal. Boys climbed from the 54th to the 79th percentile in three years. Columbia's rank has risen steadily (64th → 64th → 68th → 73rd) as it closes the gap on its high-performing district.

Please, Please if your child is enrolled in this school, get them out. My child received nothing but verbal abuse all year from the two 5th grade teachers. There is no accountability within the MV school. Students are expected to behave but teachers are not held to any standard. They have forgotten how to teach. I regret not taking my child out. They have done a lot of damage to my child. Please if you read this, get your child out of this school now! Close Quote
