Mercer Elementary School is a K–5 school with 396 students on Wimbledon Road in Shaker Heights, Ohio, one of three elementary schools in the Shaker Heights City district and roughly two miles from its same-district peers Fernway Elementary School and Lomond Elementary School. Statewide it ranked 893rd of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools in 2025–26 — the 43rd percentile, or 2 stars — below its own district's average standing of 54th percentile. Its rank has been fairly level over the past four years (41st, 42nd, 45th, 43rd percentile) after a long slide from a 4-star, 74th-percentile peak in 2018–19.

Two strengths stand out. Fifth-grade English Language Arts proficiency is 81.8%, above the state's 70.4% and above Fernway's 78.3%, even though Fernway ranks about 25 percentile points higher overall. Chronic absenteeism is 11.8%, less than half the district's 20.3% and lower than every nearby school except Fernway's 7.7%; Lomond, Gearity Professional Development School, Warrensville Heights Elementary School, and Adlai Stevenson School all run 10 to 25 points higher.

The weaknesses are concentrated and identifiable. Math is below state levels in every tested grade in every year on record — 50.7% in 3rd grade, 54.2% in 4th, and 50.0% in 5th, trailing the state by 9 to 13 points and the district in all three grades. The school's low-income subgroup ranked at the 9th percentile statewide (0 stars) and its special education subgroup at the 16th percentile (1 star) — the two most acute results in the data — and both dropped during the same year that the free/reduced-lunch share rose from 28.8% to 37.63% and the student–teacher ratio climbed from 14.0 to 18.8. The cohort producing the standout 5th-grade reading result moves on after this year, while incoming 3rd-grade reading has slipped from 73.5% to 63.5%.
