Lafayette Street School serves 1,213 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade in Newark, within the Newark Public School District. Its academic results are generally stronger than district results in ELA and math, but remain below state averages; its standout is eighth-grade Algebra I, where 96% were proficient in 2025–26, compared with 75% statewide and 81% districtwide. That result was also higher than nearby Ann Street School (93%), East Ward Elementary School (94%) and Oliver Street School (92%).

Across grades three through eight, Lafayette averaged 41% in ELA and 34% in math in 2025–26—13 and 11 points above the district, but 10 and 7 points below the state. Its upper-grade ELA results were stronger: proficiency reached 50% in sixth grade, 55% in seventh and 61% in eighth; the eighth-grade result led nearby Newark district schools reporting that grade, including Ann Street at 55%. Science is the clearest weakness relative to the state: fifth-grade proficiency was 11% versus 27% statewide, and eighth-grade proficiency was 8% versus 19%. In both grades, however, Lafayette was slightly above district results.

Results have moved in different directions: the ELA average fell 9 points from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while the math average gained 9 points from 2022–23 to 2025–26. Eighth-grade Algebra I rose from 32% to 96% over that period, though it varied considerably in between.
