Summary

Barringer High School is a Newark Public School District high school in Newark, New Jersey, serving grades 9–12 with 1,894 students. Its 2025–2026 test results show a serious academic challenge: 5% of students were proficient in grade 9 English Language Arts, compared with 35% districtwide and 51% statewide; in grade 11 NJGPA English Language Arts, 16% were proficient, 38 points below the district and 60 below the state. The clearest overall finding is that Barringer’s latest reported proficiency results are very low compared with both the district and the state.

Among nearby schools, Barringer was lowest in grade 9 English Language Arts and both reported Algebra I measures, and second-lowest in grade 11 science. Its grade 11 NJGPA English Language Arts result was also the lowest among the four nearby schools with reported results. One favorable difference in context is that 59.7% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025, the lowest share among nearby schools; their average was 78.0%. Other indicators are concerning: the 2024–2025 graduation rate was 79%, versus 87% in the district and 89% statewide. Chronic absenteeism was 29%, compared with 10% districtwide and 14% statewide; only LEAD Charter School had a higher rate among nearby schools with reported data.

Recent results show little progress in some areas and a marked decline in another. Grade 9 English Language Arts proficiency rose only from 4% in 2022–2023 to 5% in 2025–2026, while grade 11 NJGPA English Language Arts fell from 33% in 2023–2024 to 16% in 2025–2026. Algebra I results rose by 1 point over that period but remained very low.
