Summary

Conval Regional High School is a public school serving about 645 students in grades 9–12 in Peterborough, a small southwestern New Hampshire community and part of the Contoocook Valley School District. The school ranks 59th out of 89 New Hampshire high schools, placing it in the 34th percentile. Its results are mixed: graduation and dropout outcomes are better than the state average, while academic performance—especially mathematics—needs significant improvement.

Mathematics is the clearest concern. Only 19% of students were proficient, compared with 40% in the district and 44% statewide. The school’s SAT mathematics proficiency was also low at 19%, suggesting a persistent issue rather than a single testing-year problem. Reading is much stronger: 56% of students were proficient, essentially matching district and state results. Science proficiency was 33%, below the state’s 38% but better than nearby Monadnock Regional High School and Mascenic Regional High School. There are encouraging signs in student persistence: Conval’s 2024–25 graduation rate was 89.2%, above the 87.0% state rate, and its 1.9% dropout rate was below the state’s 2.3%. However, graduation has fallen from more than 94% in earlier years, and the school’s overall ranking remains well below its stronger 2017–18 and 2021–22 results. The most serious concern is special education effectiveness, which ranked near the bottom statewide in the latest data. Families may want to ask about mathematics improvement plans, academic support, progress monitoring, and services for students receiving special education. Overall, Conval appears better at helping students remain enrolled through graduation than at producing strong academic proficiency, particularly in mathematics.

A Disappointing Education Experience

Having experienced the SAU #1 ConVal school district firsthand, I must caution parents against entrusting their children's education to this organization. The entire district seems to operate under the thumb of the teachers union, resulting in a culture where mediocrity is tolerated and excellence is rarely rewarded.

One of the most glaring issues is the "one for all and all for one" mentality that pervades the SAU and school board. This approach fails to distinguish between top-performing teachers and those who consistently underperform. It's disheartening to see dedicated educators who strive for excellence lumped together with individuals who continuously produce subpar results in their classrooms.

Shockingly, only a quarter of the teachers within the ConVal school system demonstrate they are worth their salaries. This leaves a staggering majority whose contributions to students' academic growth and development are questionable at best.

Equally concerning is the mismanagement at the highest levels of the SAU. Instead of focusing on prudent financial stewardship and educational innovation, the superintendent has been preoccupied with suing the State of New Hampshire to secure additional funding for the district. This misplaced priority not only reflects a lack of strategic leadership but also raises doubts about the superintendent's ability to manage budgets responsibly and effectively.

Furthermore, the overall administration of the SAU #1 ConVal district appears out of touch with the needs of students and families. Important decisions are seemingly made without sufficient consideration for their impact on educational outcomes or community welfare.

In conclusion, SAU #1 ConVal fails to uphold standards of excellence in education due to its union-dominated governance, indiscriminate treatment of educators, and misdirected leadership priorities. Parents seeking a school district committed to fostering academic achievement and accountability should look elsewhere until substantial reforms are implemented to address these systemic issues.
