Milford School District

Milford School District serves approximately 1,982 students in five schools spanning pre-kindergarten through grade 12: three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district is ranked around the 34th percentile statewide, so its overall performance is below New Hampshire’s midpoint, although results vary considerably by school. Milford High School is the district’s clear standout, while younger grades—especially elementary and middle school—show greater academic challenges.

Milford High School has the strongest combination of achievement and student outcomes. It recently improved to the 72nd percentile and a four-star rating, compared with one star for Heron Pond Elementary School and two stars for Milford Middle School. The high school reports a 95.5% graduation rate and no reported dropouts. Its reading proficiency is 64%, above the state’s 55%, and its science result is slightly above the state comparison. Mathematics remains weaker at 36%. By contrast, Heron Pond and Milford Middle trail the state in all tested subjects. Heron Pond declined in math, reading, and science, while Milford Middle improved in math and reading but fell sharply in science.

Science is the most important district-wide concern: proficiency is 26% at Heron Pond Elementary School and only 19% at Milford Middle School, compared with 39% at the high school. Fifth grade at Heron Pond is also a key transition point, with just 23% proficient in mathematics, while eighth-grade reading and science are particularly low at the middle school. Jacques Memorial Elementary School and Milford Early Education Experiences have favorable student-teacher ratios but no comparable testing data because of their young grades. Parents comparing schools should view the high school as the district’s strongest academic option and pay close attention to elementary-to-middle-school continuity, especially in science and mathematics.
