Summary

Forbush Middle is a public school in East Bend, NC, serving 598 students in grades 6–8 within Yadkin County Schools. The school has long performed at a solid, mid-to-upper level statewide, but its most recent ranking fell to 2 stars (40th percentile), a notable step back from its 3-star standing in prior years. Even so, Forbush remains the stronger of the county's two middle schools, topping Starmount Middle in most subjects, including 8th grade math (61% vs. 45% proficient) and 8th grade science (68% vs. 58%).

Academically, the picture is mixed. Eighth grade math and science are genuine bright spots, competitive with state averages, while reading is a serious weakness at every grade level. Only 43% of 8th graders read proficiently, compared to 56% statewide. The gap is especially stark next to Lewisville Middle, just 9 miles away, which reports nearly identical poverty rates yet outperforms Forbush by 20 to 30 percentage points in almost every subject. This suggests families should look closely at literacy instruction and intervention when evaluating the school, since reading struggles can ripple into other subjects.

There are positive signs as well. Chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically to 18.2%, beating both the district (22.3%) and state (24.2%) averages, and the student-teacher ratio has dropped to 16.9. However, equity gaps deserve attention: English Language Learner students have ranked near the very bottom statewide for two consecutive years, and the school's most recent subgroup rankings for Hispanic and Gifted/Talented students also declined sharply. For parents, Forbush offers competitive math and science instruction and strong attendance momentum, but it's worth asking how the school plans to strengthen literacy and support its diverse learners.
