Summary

Fall Creek Elementary is a small PK-5 public school in East Bend, NC, serving 251 students in the Yadkin County Schools district. For most of the past decade, Fall Creek was a consistently strong school, ranking between the 72nd and 84th percentiles statewide and peaking at 244th out of 1,489 schools in 2020-21. Its most recent results, however, show a sharp drop to the 51st percentile (732nd of 1,492 schools) — a loss of roughly 370 places in a single year that puts the school at a crossroads.

Academically, math remains a clear strength. Fall Creek's proficiency rates beat both the state and district averages in every tested grade, from 65.9% in 4th grade to 69.4% in 3rd grade. Reading is more concerning, with all tested grade levels below the state average (for example, 50.0% vs. 55.6% statewide in 3rd grade). Science saw the steepest decline: 5th grade proficiency fell to 53.7%, well below the state's 67.7% and a dramatic drop from 81.5% just two years earlier. Even with this slide, Fall Creek still outranks several nearby schools, including Courtney Elementary (36th percentile), Yadkinville Elementary (31st), and Copeland Elementary (44th).

Several other factors stand out. Chronic absenteeism is a genuine asset at just 12.6% — roughly half the district rate of 22.3% — and notably better than nearby East Bend Elementary at 20.8%. The school's economic profile shifted dramatically, with free/reduced-price lunch participation jumping from about 57% to 96.4%, while its student-teacher ratio rose from 13.6 to 19.6 — the highest among all nearby comparison schools. An interesting contrast is Shoals Elementary, just 8.6 miles away in Surry County Schools, which serves an almost identical student population yet ranks in the 95th percentile — evidence that high poverty alone doesn't determine outcomes. Given Fall Creek's low absenteeism, continued math strength, and solid instructional foundation, the school appears well-positioned to recover, but the combination of larger classes and substantially higher economic need will likely require additional support to regain its former top-quartile status.
