Wakefield Middle is a traditional public middle school in Raleigh, NC, serving roughly 803 students in grades 6–8 through Wake County Schools. The school has a long record of strong results, ranking #103 out of 778 middle schools statewide — in the 87th percentile and well within the top 15% of North Carolina middle schools. Over the past decade, Wakefield has consistently ranked between the 77th and 89th percentiles and has never dropped below a 4-star rating.

Academically, Wakefield is strongest in reading and science. Reading proficiency runs between 74% and 76% at all three grade levels — roughly 10 to 20 points above the state average. In 8th-grade science, 81.6% of students were proficient in 2025–2026, up from 71.2% the previous year. As for math, scores dipped sharply for the prior 8th-grade class, but the newest cohort recovered to district level. The school also performs well for groups that often struggle elsewhere: English Learners, students receiving special education services, and low-income students all rank in strong percentiles statewide, and the economically disadvantaged subgroup jumped from the 43rd to 71st percentile in one year. Attendance is another strength: chronic absenteeism is 19.1%, below the district rate of 20.5% and the state rate of 24.2%.

Among nearby traditional public middle schools, only Heritage Middle posts clearly higher results. West Millbrook Middle offers the most similar comparison, since it serves nearly the same share of economically disadvantaged students — yet Wakefield comes out ahead in state ranking, reading, and science. Magellan Charter, a local charter school, is another option that scores higher overall. Wakefield's efficiency makes its success even more notable: per-pupil spending of $8,502 is the lowest among every nearby school on the list, and its student-to-teacher ratio of 17.7:1 is the highest. Despite larger class sizes and less funding per student than its neighbors, Wakefield still delivers some of the strongest test scores in the area.

I have had very positive experiences with the teachers at Wakefield Middle School. The principal is very involved and invested in the students lives and there is a palpable sense of caring.
