Summary

Zebulon Middle is a grades 6–8 school in Zebulon, NC, that serves 772 students in the eastern part of Wake County Schools. It is part of a district ranked 60th out of 246 in North Carolina, yet the school itself sits in the 34th percentile statewide with a 2-star rating. Nearly all students are from economically disadvantaged families (99.61% free/reduced lunch), and chronic absenteeism is high at 28.9% — well above the district's 20.5%.

In every tested subject, proficiency falls short of district and state averages. For example, 7th grade math proficiency is 42.0% compared to 66.4% across Wake County, and 8th grade reading is 43.9% versus 65.4% districtwide. Encouragingly, Zebulon improved in most subjects last year, with 8th grade science jumping from 47.6% to 60.7% and 8th grade math rising 11.8 points. Still, the school has not returned to the mid-level ranking it held in 2021–22. Students with disabilities are a particular concern, with outcomes falling to the 11th percentile statewide after sitting near the 43rd percentile just two years earlier.

Comparison with nearby schools shows what is possible. Heritage Middle, just 13.7 miles away in the same district, ranks in the 94th percentile with far lower poverty (16.9%) and absenteeism (16.3%). More striking, several high-poverty neighbors achieve strong results: Archer Lodge Middle, where 99.75% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, ranks in the 72nd percentile and posts 7th grade math scores nearly 28 points higher than Zebulon's. The data suggest that poverty alone does not explain outcomes. Reducing absenteeism and expanding support for students with special needs are the most promising paths forward, and the recent gains in science show that improvement is achievable.

Open Quote Great School! Exceptional teachers who care about the students. Lack of community support, but the students are happy, and seems to really try their best. Administration has changed a few times, but are trying their best to improve the reputation of the school. Close Quote
