Nash County Public Schools

Located in eastern North Carolina, Nash County Public Schools is a 23-school district serving roughly 13,178 students in elementary, middle, and high school, and it is a high-poverty district where almost every school has a free/reduced-price lunch rate above 95%. The district overall is ranked 158th out of 246 North Carolina districts with a 2-star rating, and its biggest academic weakness is reading: elementary reading proficiency lags the state by 7–10 points in grades 3–5, and middle-school reading is also below state averages in most grades. Chronic absenteeism is another major concern at 25.9% districtwide, well above the state rate of 24.2%.

The district’s success stories show that poverty does not prevent strong outcomes. Nash Early College High School is the clear standout, ranking in the 96th percentile of high schools with near-universal proficiency in most end-of-course tests despite 99.2% student poverty and the district’s lowest per-pupil spending. Among traditional schools, Nash Central High School is the best comprehensive high school, with Math I and Math III scores well above state averages. Nash Central Middle School is the strongest middle school, while Coopers Elementary, Nashville Elementary, and Red Oak Elementary are the standout elementary schools, all ranking above the state median. CITI High School, a small alternative school, also deserves attention for its 93.2% graduation rate and the lowest chronic absenteeism in the district at 8.0%.

At the other end, Tar River Academy posts the weakest results in the district with a 76.1% chronic absenteeism rate, while Nash Everywhere Digital Academy (NEDA) has a 69.0% graduation rate. G R Edwards Elementary is the lowest-ranked elementary school, and Rocky Mount High also struggles with high absenteeism and below-average performance. There is positive momentum worth watching: Southern Nash Middle has climbed from the 481st to 339th rank, and both Nash Central High and Nash Central Middle have improved steadily over the past three years. For parents, the clearest takeaway is that school choice within the district matters enormously—the early college, CITI, and the Nash Central cluster schools consistently outperform the rest of the county, while literacy support and attendance should be top priorities for families in lower-performing schools.
