Summary

Leesville Road High is a large, traditional public high school in northwest Raleigh, NC, serving roughly 2,411 students in grades 9–12 as part of Wake County Schools. It currently ranks #155 out of 662 North Carolina high schools, placing it in the 77th percentile with a 4-star rating — the highest statewide ranking among nearby traditional Wake County high schools, ahead of Needham Broughton High (#193), Cary High (#279), Millbrook High (#301), Athens Drive High (#329), and Sanderson High (#383).

Academically, Leesville stands out most dramatically in math. Its Math I proficiency rate of 62.3% is roughly double or triple the rates at nearby comprehensive Wake high schools, which range from about 22% to 34%, and it easily clears the state average of 42.1%. The school also leads its comprehensive peers in Biology (80.4%) and posts a strong Math III proficiency of 86.4%, well above district and state averages. English II proficiency is solid at 78.2%, though Needham Broughton edges it out. Leesville also graduates students at a 92.6% rate — the best among nearby traditional Wake high schools — and its chronic absenteeism of 20.9% is lower than all of its traditional Wake neighbors. Notably, it achieves these results despite having the highest student-teacher ratio (19.6:1) and lowest per-pupil spending ($8,133) in the comparison group.

One of the most encouraging findings is how well the school serves students who often struggle elsewhere. Leesville's special education students rank in the 91st percentile statewide, and its English learner students rank in the 85th percentile — both actually stronger than the school's overall ranking. African American students have improved steadily over three years, now sitting in the 79th percentile, and low-income students have also moved upward. The school's overall performance has climbed from #187 in 2023–2024 to #155 today, though it hasn't yet returned to its former top-10% status from earlier years. If recent trends hold, Leesville is well-positioned to remain a standout among North Carolina's large public high schools.
