Summary

Leesville Road Elementary is a K–5 school in northwest Raleigh serving about 528 students as part of Wake County Schools, and it has become one of North Carolina's top-performing elementary schools — ranked #34 out of 1,492 schools statewide and earning a 5-star rating. In every grade and subject tested, the school posts proficiency rates between roughly 84% and 93%, beating the Wake County average by at least 16 percentage points in math, reading, and science. Its stature has grown quickly: Leesville moved from #193 in 2023–2024 to #34 today, suggesting recent school-wide efforts are paying off.

Attendance is a major part of that story. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 22.9% in 2021–2022 to just 6.5% in 2024–2025, about one-third the district and state rates. Only nearby Barton Pond Elementary (5.6%) is lower. Among its Raleigh neighbors, Leesville is the highest-ranked school in the cluster, ahead of Barton Pond (#48), Jeffreys Grove Elementary (#53), and Sycamore Creek Elementary (#145), and dramatically ahead of schools like Hilburn Drive Academy (#365), Lead Mine Elementary (#601), and Baileywick Road Elementary (#1,217).

Leesville also stands out for serving all students well. State subgroup rankings for its low-income students and Black/African American students have climbed from the bottom half of the state a few years ago to the 97th and 92nd percentiles, respectively. The one area with room to grow is gifted education — its gifted students rank in the 58th percentile statewide, strong but below the school's overall level. For parents, the takeaway is clear: Leesville combines top-tier academics, steep recent improvement, and a strong attendance culture that makes it a standout choice even in a competitive Wake County market.

Open Quote This school is amazing! All of the teachers and the administration are phenomenal. They are so supportive and all about being a family. I couldn't ask for a better experience for my child. Thank you Leesville for everything you do! Close Quote

Open Quote Current principal is ruining this school that was once very good. He calls all the time often during dinner which is annoying. He spends more time practicing his speech for his phone messages than worrying about the students and the scores which are going down. The school was become run down with weeds including poison ivy, high grass, and looks like a mud hole when it rains because a lot of the grass is gone. He wants free volunteers all the time and wants your money for fundraisers but he is missing what really matters. Glad one of my kids are out of there and the other will be soon. Close Quote
