Summary

Needham Broughton High is a large, traditional public high school in central Raleigh, North Carolina, serving about 2,153 students in grades 9–12 as part of Wake County Schools. It earns a 4-star rating and ranks 193rd out of 662 North Carolina high schools, placing it in the 71st percentile for 2025-2026. Its 91.4% graduation rate tops both the Wake County average (91.3%) and the state rate (88.8%). Chronic absenteeism has improved from 32.4% in 2021-2022 to 23.4%, now below the state average and better than several nearby schools.

Broughton posts strong End-of-Course results in Biology (74.6% proficient), English II (83.6%), and Math III (84.8%) — all well above district and state averages. However, only 26.3% of students pass Math I, far below the Wake County average of 36.6% and the state average of 42.1%; this weak spot has persisted for years even as advanced math scores shine. Compared with nearby traditional schools, Broughton clearly outpaces Athens Drive High in every EOC subject and graduation rate, while sitting just behind Enloe High in overall ranking. Broughton edges Enloe in Math III and posts lower chronic absenteeism. Smaller specialized schools nearby, including Raleigh Charter High School, Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy, Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy, and Vernon Malone College and Career Academy, rank higher, but they are smaller, selective programs.

Broughton's most significant internal challenge is an equity gap. The school is highly effective for special education students, who perform at the 78th percentile statewide, and for gifted students, but outcomes for economically disadvantaged students sit at the 36th percentile, and results for Hispanic and African American students trail the school's overall profile. With a student-teacher ratio of 18.2:1, Broughton serves more students per teacher than nearby Enloe (17.7), Athens Drive (17.1), and Raleigh Charter (12.8), yet still produces consistently above-average results. Closing the Math I gap and raising outcomes for economically disadvantaged students could move this solid school into the top quarter of North Carolina high schools.
