Summary

East Union Middle is a public middle school in Marshville, North Carolina, serving 695 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Union County Public Schools district, which is ranked 42 out of 242 districts in the state.

While East Union Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina middle schools over the past 10 years, the school faces significant academic challenges. Its performance on state assessments is generally below the district and state averages, with proficiency rates ranging from 39.9% to 63.6% in Mathematics and 36% to 38.8% in Reading across grades 6-8. The school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with a free and reduced-price lunch rate of 99.57% in 2023-2024, may be a contributing factor to its academic struggles.

Interestingly, the nearby Weddington Middle and other Union County Public Schools generally outperform East Union Middle on academic measures, with higher rankings, proficiency rates, and lower percentages of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. For example, Weddington Middle ranked 14th out of 773 North Carolina middle schools in 2024-2025, with proficiency rates ranging from 82.6% to 97.5% across different subjects and grade levels. While the reasons for these performance differences are complex, the school's high poverty rate and limited resources may be contributing factors.

Open Quote This school is horrible honestly, take it from a graduated student. They do nothing about bullying which happens a lot until you're forced to fight in self defense then all of a sudden they "care." Nobody respects the principal, he's a very bad leader. Everything went downhill once he arrived. They hire almost anybody, they hired one substitute for my 7th grade reading class who called us all strippers and said he'd cut our heads off. He got fired but still, why was that guy not in jail? I've met about 4 teachers here that are absolutely amazing leaders but the rest don't care. They hired one woman for science who JUST graduated and had NO experience, nobody knew the EOG material by the end of the year. I knew a student there who was literally 17 years old and in 8th grade, their codes make no sense. They'll yell at you for having on tight jeans but will let people get bullied in the hallway.
