The school currently holds a 4-star rating and ranks 177th of 778 North Carolina middle schools (77th percentile) for 2025-2026. That remains above the state average, but it reflects a two-year decline: Porter Ridge Middle School ranked 72nd statewide (91st percentile, 5 stars) in 2023-2024. Its current standing is the lowest the school has posted in a decade of data.

Porter Ridge is the largest middle school in its immediate area, outpacing Sun Valley Middle (909), Piedmont Middle (980), and even Weddington Middle (1,324). Its student-teacher ratio of 23.0 is the highest in that comparison group and has risen from 20.5 in recent years. Test results illustrate the drift: in 2023-2024, the school beat its district average in every subject and grade; in 2025-2026, it trails Union County Public Schools in nearly all tested areas, with the largest gaps in 8th-grade science, 8th-grade math, and 7th-grade math.
