Weddington Middle

Weddington Middle is a large public school in Matthews, NC, serving about 1,324 students in grades 6-8 as part of Union County Public Schools. It ranks 15th out of 778 middle schools in North Carolina, placing it in the 98th percentile with a 5-star rating — a level of excellence the school has sustained for years, having ranked as high as #1 in the state as recently as the 2017-2018 school year.

Academically, Weddington simply outperforms nearly every school around it. In 8th grade math, an impressive 96.2% of students score proficient, which beats nearby Marvin Ridge Middle (91.7%), Cuthbertson Middle (90.8%), and Community House Middle (86.7%). It also posts the highest 8th grade science proficiency (95.2%) and the lowest chronic absenteeism (7.3%) among its neighboring rivals. While its demographics are certainly advantaged, Weddington’s success clearly isn’t just about affluence — its special education students rank 2nd in the entire state, and its low-income students rank 23rd. The same district comparison is striking: nearby Parkwood Middle and Sun Valley Middle have substantially lower proficiency rates and triple the chronic absenteeism, showing that district membership alone doesn’t drive results.

Weddington achieves elite outcomes with remarkable efficiency. Per-pupil spending is just $6,716 — lower than every nearby comparison school — and its student-teacher ratio of 20.3 is far from the smallest in the area. This points to a well-run school with high expectations and strong systems in place. The one item worth watching is the gifted and talented subgroup ranking, which dipped to the 88th percentile in the latest data after two straight years in the 98th; this may simply be normal year-to-year fluctuation. Overall, Weddington Middle stands out as a top-tier, highly effective school that delivers exceptional results across all types of learners.
