Summary

Anson Middle is a public middle school located in Wadesboro, North Carolina, serving grades 7-8 with a total enrollment of 431 students. The school is part of the Anson County Schools district, which is ranked 182 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Anson Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of North Carolina middle schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 532-740 out of 691-793 schools.

Anson Middle's academic performance is significantly below the state averages across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 32% of 7th graders and 27.1% of 8th graders were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to the state averages of 53.5% and 48.7%, respectively. The reading proficiency rates were also low, with 36.7% of 7th graders and 29.6% of 8th graders meeting or exceeding standards, compared to the state averages of 51.9% and 54.2%. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of North Carolina middle schools for African American, Hispanic, and multi-racial students, as well as for English Language Learners and students with disabilities.

Anson Middle's struggles are not solely a reflection of the broader Anson County Schools district's challenges, as the school's academic performance lags behind the district averages. Interestingly, the nearby Wadesboro Elementary, which serves grades 4-6, generally has higher academic proficiency rates than Anson Middle, suggesting that the academic challenges may intensify as students transition to the middle school level. Anson Middle's statewide ranking has also steadily declined over the past several years, indicating that the school's academic challenges may be worsening over time.

Open Quote The worst. I’ve never experienced such an awful place. Trying to find another school my daughter can go to and if not we are very willing to move out of this county for a better school. They will have all these plans but they never work. Ranked 640 out of 733 schools? Wow. Do better. Can’t keep teachers. They’re tired. I get it. Many kids there run the show NOT the teachers, nor their principle. Close Quote

Open Quote I almost didn't send my youngest son to school there after the experience I had with my oldest son, but the new principal is tough and the school is so much better than it was two years ago. I feel like my youngest son is safe and getting a good education. Close Quote
