Summary

Anson Middle serves 414 students in grades 7 and 8 in Wadesboro, North Carolina, part of Anson County Schools, where nearly all students (99%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is showing genuine signs of a turnaround after hitting bottom in the early 2020s: its statewide rank improved from the 7th percentile (0 stars) in 2023–2024 to the 20th percentile (1 star) in 2025–2026. That climb of 114 places means Anson is no longer among North Carolina’s lowest-performing middle schools, although it still has not quite returned to its own 2016–2017 level.

Academically, Anson remains behind the state average in every tested subject, but recent gains are substantial, especially in 8th grade. Between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, 8th grade math proficiency jumped from 27.1% to 43.8%, and 8th grade science surged from 30.8% to 55.9%. Even so, compared with nearby middle schools such as Rockingham Middle, Ellerbe Middle, South Stanly Middle, East Union Middle, and Cordova Middle, Anson trails most peers by wide margins in 7th grade reading and math. The one bright spot is 8th grade science, where Anson (55.9%) is essentially tied with Rockingham Middle, though it still lags Ellerbe and South Stanly by 10 to 19 points.

Attendance is a major success story: chronic absenteeism fell from 49.5% in 2023–2024 to 34.0% in 2024–2025, making Anson 8 points better than the district average; however, it remains nearly 10 points above the state. The biggest red flag is special education: the school ranked at the 2nd percentile statewide for that subgroup in 2025–2026, the weakest of all its subgroup metrics. Notably, the feeder pattern with nearby Wadesboro Elementary shows 6th grade proficiency rates nearly identical to Anson’s 7th grade rates, suggesting students arrive with similar skill levels but may not be growing much in the transition year. If current momentum continues—especially in attendance and 8th grade—Anson Middle could become a meaningful success story in a district still ranked near the bottom of the state.

The worst. I’ve never experienced such an awful place. Trying to find another school my daughter can go to and if not we are very willing to move out of this county for a better school. They will have all these plans but they never work. Ranked 640 out of 733 schools? Wow. Do better. Can’t keep teachers. They’re tired. I get it. Many kids there run the show NOT the teachers, nor their principle. Close Quote
