Summary

Cedar Ridge Elementary is a PK–5 school in Lowgap, NC, serving 348 students as part of Surry County Schools. Although the district overall earns 3 stars and ranks in the 57th percentile statewide, Cedar Ridge has fallen sharply over the past decade — from the 76th percentile with a 4-star rating in 2015-2016 to the 29th percentile with a 1-star rating today. The school serves a nearly universally economically disadvantaged population, with 99.1% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. That high poverty rate is typical of the surrounding area, but Cedar Ridge’s academic decline distinguishes it from similar nearby schools.

Declines have been broad-based across student subgroups. White students and low-income students are the lowest-performing groups, ranking at the 12th and 26th percentiles respectively compared with their statewide peers — both down sharply over the last three years. English learners rank closer to the middle, though they too have declined. The comparison with Dobson Elementary is especially instructive: located just 8.9 miles away in the same district, Dobson serves a similarly high-poverty student body yet ranks in the 77th percentile with strong achievement across all grades and chronic absenteeism below 10%. Cedar Ridge’s combination of high poverty, high absenteeism, and declining performance — despite genuine strengths in early-grade instruction — points to attendance as a likely high-leverage starting point for improvement.
