Jones Intermediate is a public school in Mount Airy, NC, serving 339 students in grades 3–5. It is the only upper-elementary school in the Mount Airy City Schools district, whose other campus, Bruce H. Tharrington Primary, serves PK–2. Over 99% of Jones students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — a level of poverty nearly identical to surrounding elementary schools. Despite that shared context, the school has slipped from a 3-star, 66th-percentile state ranking in 2015-16 to a 2-star, 33rd-percentile ranking in 2025-26 (1,006th of 1,492 elementary schools statewide) — its weakest showing since 2018-19.

Academically, Jones is closest to state averages in 3rd grade and loses ground by 5th grade. Terrible terrible terrible school....out of control and they aren’t interested in education but interested in making sure that all kids feel good. There is 0 to none parent involvement and no textbooks for the kids. The admins are horrible and kids take state tests that they haven’t even been taught the info on. I would NEVER sallow my child to go there. Close Quote
