Alleghany County Schools

Alleghany County Schools is a small, rural North Carolina district serving 1,352 students across four schools — three PK-8 elementary schools (Sparta Elementary, Glade Creek Elementary, and Piney Creek Elementary) and one high school, Alleghany High. The district earns a three-star rating and ranks 99th out of 246 North Carolina districts, landing near the 60th percentile. Nearly all students qualify for free or reduced lunch, yet performance varies widely from school to school.

Piney Creek Elementary is the clearest standout, surging from the 41st to the 77th percentile in one year to rank 348th out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools with a four-star rating. It outperforms the state in every reported grade and subject while spending the least per student ($11,143). Glade Creek Elementary is the most improved school, jumping 362 spots in the state rankings and improving from one to two stars; reading proficiency climbed from 35.7% to 52.0%, and chronic absenteeism is an exceptionally low 5.1%. Alleghany High also shines, ranking 208th out of 662 high schools with a 91.6% graduation rate; its composite EOC average jumped from 54.8% to 71.0%, and it exceeds the state in Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III.

By contrast, Sparta Elementary, the district's largest school with 523 students, is the most challenged: it ranks 1,077th out of 1,492 elementary schools (one star), has the district's highest chronic absenteeism rate (18.3%), and struggles most with reading, posting 30% fifth-grade proficiency versus 55.3% statewide. District-wide, third-grade math is a clear strength, with all three PK-8 schools beating the state average of 66.4%. Alleghany High's 68.5% Math I proficiency is remarkable compared with the state rate of 42.1%. Notably, spending and class size are not obvious drivers of success — Piney Creek Elementary achieves the strongest results with the lowest per-student spending and larger classes, while Sparta Elementary lags despite higher spending and smaller classes. If Sparta Elementary could improve attendance and early reading, the entire district's profile would rise meaningfully.
