Summary

Hobbton Elementary is a K–5 public school in Newton Grove, NC, serving 453 students in Sampson County Schools. The school ranks 361st out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools (76th percentile) and carries a 4-star rating—a strong result for a school where 95.6% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Hobbton recovered from a post-pandemic dip (46th percentile in 2020–21) and has held steady in the 71–78 percentile range for the past four years. It is effectively tied with Midway Elementary as the highest-performing school in the surrounding area, and it far outpaces Salemburg Elementary—located about 15 miles away with similar demographics and in the same district—which sits in just the 32nd percentile.

Math is Hobbton's signature strength. In the most recent state test results, 4th grade math proficiency reached 87.3%, compared to 61.4% statewide—a gap of roughly 25 points. Third grade posted 82.7% versus 66.4%, and 5th grade posted 79.3% versus 62.9%. The school is also highly effective with students who are typically underserved: low-income students rank in the 93rd percentile statewide, English learners in the 91st percentile, and special education students in the 91st percentile. Those results, in a building where almost every child qualifies for meal assistance, point to genuine school-level strengths, not demographic advantages.

The biggest concern is attendance. Chronic absenteeism is 29.2%—a real improvement from 42.6% in 2021–22, but above the statewide 24.2% and well above the 16.8% rate at Midway Elementary. Reading is more uneven than math: 3rd and 5th grade reading exceed state averages, but 4th grade reading has slid from 76.7% in 2023–24 to 50.6% in the most recent results. Gifted and talented students also rank only in the 19th percentile statewide—an unusual contrast with the top-decile results for high-need groups. If Hobbton can close the attendance gap and lift reading to match its math performance, this already very good school could push into the top quartile with confidence.
