Salemburg Elementary is a public PK–5 school in the small town of Salemburg, NC, serving about 502 students within Sampson County Schools. Nearly all of its students come from economically disadvantaged households, yet the school has struggled to keep pace academically even with nearby schools serving similar populations. In the most recent state ranking (2025–26), Salemburg placed in the 32nd percentile of North Carolina elementary schools and earned a 2-star rating — a step up from its 1-star, 17th-percentile result the year before, but still firmly in the bottom third of the state.

The biggest academic challenge is reading: only 36.2% of third graders and 37.3% of fifth graders scored proficient in 2025–26, roughly 20 points below the state average and far behind Midway Elementary and Clement Elementary — two same-district schools with similarly high poverty rates where reading proficiency reached 60–69%. The school’s record over the past decade has been volatile, with stronger showings as high as the 62nd percentile in 2017–18 and the 52nd percentile in 2021–22. Given that Midway Elementary and Clement Elementary achieve far stronger outcomes while serving equally high-poverty communities in the same district, Salemburg’s current performance is not inevitable; a sustained focus on early literacy and attendance could help it chart a more stable path forward.
