Hobbton High is a small rural high school in Newton Grove, NC, serving 467 students in grades 9 through 12 as part of Sampson County Schools. Nearly all of its students — 99.4% — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school currently holds a 1-star state rating, ranking 483rd out of 662 North Carolina high schools (27th percentile), a sharp decline from its 3-star, 50th-percentile standing as recently as 2022-2023.

Academically, results are mixed. The school shines in Math III, where 68.9% of students were proficient in the most recent year, matching the state average and beating several nearby schools. English II (48.2% proficient) and Biology (35.5%) lag well behind district and state averages, and Biology is the lowest of any school in the area. The contrast with Midway High, just 8 miles away, is striking: both schools serve nearly identical low-income populations (about 99% free/reduced-price lunch), yet Midway High posts dramatically higher scores — 91.5% in Math III, 69.4% in English II, and 59.5% in Biology. The nearby school also has far lower chronic absenteeism (15.8% versus 26.6%), pointing to attendance and school climate as key factors.

There are real positives as well. Hobbton High's graduation rate has risen from roughly 75% in 2021-2022 to 84.1% in the most recent year, and English Learner students rank at the 57th percentile statewide, a genuine strength. However, gifted students' ranking dropped sharply from the 62nd percentile two years ago to the 4th percentile, and male students are served less effectively than female students. The school has demonstrated it can perform at the state's middle level, and Midway High shows what is achievable with a similar population.
