Summary

Reidsville Middle serves about 543 students in grades 6–8 in Reidsville, NC, as part of Rockingham County Schools. Over the past decade, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina middle schools, placing in the 11th percentile statewide in 2025–2026.

Reidsville Middle faces significant academic challenges. Proficiency rates trail the state by 15 to 30 percentage points in nearly every subject and grade. For example, only 26% of 7th graders were proficient in math versus 56.2% statewide. The school also serves an extremely high-poverty population, with over 99% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Chronic absenteeism is a major concern: 45% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, nearly double the state rate of 24.2%. What makes this even more striking is that Rockingham County Middle — just five miles away, in the same district, with similarly high poverty — ranked in the 45th percentile, and Kernodle Middle, also high-poverty, reached the 76th percentile. This shows that high poverty alone does not have to determine low outcomes.

There are a few bright spots. English Learner students at Reidsville Middle ranked in the 67th percentile statewide in 2025–2026, a major jump from the 24th percentile the year before. The school also showed slight improvement overall, moving from the 9th to the 11th percentile. However, the most urgent priorities remain clear: reducing chronic absenteeism and raising math and reading proficiency, especially in 7th grade math, where only about one in four students is performing at grade level.
