Mendenhall Middle

Mendenhall Middle is a large public middle school in northeast Greensboro serving about 905 students in grades 6–8 as part of Guilford County Schools. The school has experienced a significant decline over the past several years: it ranked in the mid-50th percentile statewide as recently as 2021–2022, but today sits at the 23rd percentile with a 1-star rating, placing it in the bottom quarter of North Carolina middle schools. Nearly every student at Mendenhall (99.7%) qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, reflecting a very high-poverty student population.

One of the school's biggest red flags is chronic absenteeism. In the most recent year, 42.2% of students were chronically absent — about 45% higher than the district rate of 29.2% and roughly double the state average. Academic proficiency in most math and reading subjects trails district and state averages by 10 to 15 points. But there is a notable bright spot: Mendenhall's 8th grade science scores have been above the district average for four straight years, and in two of those years they matched or exceeded the state average. This suggests that strong instruction is happening in at least one subject area.

The comparison to nearby schools shows that Mendenhall's challenges are not inevitable. Kiser Middle, just two miles away, serves nearly the same high-poverty population but ranks at the 50th percentile and has 10 percentage points less chronic absenteeism. Lincoln Academy and Kernodle Middle — both with poverty rates above 98% — rank in the upper quarter of the state and have chronic absenteeism near 18%. Inside Mendenhall, outcomes vary widely by subgroup, with economically disadvantaged students ranking at the 12th percentile statewide. The path forward likely depends on aggressively improving attendance and extending the school's science success to other subjects.
