Best Public Schools in Elon, NC

The city of Elon, North Carolina, contains four public schools — two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school — serving roughly 3,287 students in grades K–12 through the Alamance-Burlington Schools district, which currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks 179th of 246 districts statewide. Despite that modest district ranking, Elon's individual schools tell a more nuanced story. Both elementary schools serve populations where nearly every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, yet they are the city's strongest academic performers.

Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary is the top overall performer. It ranks in the 64th percentile statewide (#541 of 1,492 elementary schools) and leads the city with 64.8% average proficiency — all while 99.5% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Elon Elementary also outperforms the district in every subject and reaches the 53rd percentile despite a 99.6% economic disadvantage rate. At the secondary level, Western Alamance Middle showed the biggest one-year improvement in Elon, lifting average proficiency from 43.6% to 54.7% and climbing from the 31st to the 46th percentile. Western Alamance High, by contrast, is the weakest-ranked school at the 48th percentile; it has strong Math III results (77.6%) but Biology proficiency of only 45.1%.

The main concerns are an 8th-grade math dip and a science fade. At Western Alamance Middle, 8th-grade math proficiency sits at just 35.0%, far below the state average of 53.0%, despite solid 6th- and 7th-grade math scores. Likewise, both elementary schools beat the state average on 5th-grade science, yet high-school Biology trails the state by more than 13 points. Chronic absenteeism at Western Alamance High (38.2%) is dramatically higher than the state rate (24.2%) and its feeder middle school (22.6%), which helps explain a graduation rate of 85.5% that trails the state's 88.8%. The encouraging news: 3rd-grade reading improved sharply at both elementary schools, 7th-grade math jumped 26.1 points, and most other grades improved as well, so the academic momentum in Elon's earlier grades is worth watching.
