Summary

Manning Elementary School serves 630 students in pre-K through grade 5 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and like virtually every school in the surrounding area, nearly all of its students (99.5%) come from low-income families. The school is part of the Roanoke Rapids City Schools district, and its state ranking has hovered around the middle of North Carolina elementary schools, placing 779th out of 1,492 (48th percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year.

Manning's strongest academic areas are math and science, particularly in the upper grades. On the most recent end-of-grade tests, 73.9% of Manning's 5th graders scored proficient in math, compared with 62.9% statewide, and 76.1% scored proficient in science versus 67.7% statewide. The school's attendance record is another standout. With a chronic absenteeism rate of 21.3%, Manning is below the state average of 24.2% and dramatically healthier than regional neighbors like Central Elementary (52.6%), Everetts Elementary S.T.E.M. Academy (49.3%), and Weldon Elementary School (39.8%).

The main academic challenge at Manning is early reading. Only 38.9% of its 3rd graders scored proficient in reading, compared with 55.6% statewide and 47.0% across the district. This gap is especially visible next to Belmont Elementary School, which serves a nearly identical student population in the same district yet posted a 57.7% 3rd-grade reading proficiency rate. Encouragingly, Manning's reading scores recover considerably by 5th grade (51.1% versus 55.3% statewide), and the school produces strong results for English Learner and gifted students, ranking in the 69th and 96th percentiles statewide for those groups. Special education outcomes have also improved sharply over the past three years. For parents, the picture is clear: Manning offers solid math and science instruction and notably good attendance, with early literacy as the key area to watch.
