Aurelian Springs Institute of Global Lea is a small, rural elementary school in Littleton, NC, serving 140 students in grades PK–5 as part of Halifax County Schools, where nearly 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. There are some bright spots. In 2024-25, 5th grade math proficiency reached 68.4% — above the state average — and 4th grade reading reached 57.1%. Those gains reversed sharply in 2025-26, with 5th grade math dropping to 43.8% and 4th grade reading to 31.8%. Because the school enrolls only 140 students, each grade cohort is very small, so a few students can substantially swing results from year to year. Even in the latest year, 5th graders roughly matched district averages in math (43.8% vs. 43.4%) and science (50.0% vs. 49.7%), while 3rd grade reading (19%) and 4th grade math (27.3%) fell far short.
