Summary

Pittman Elementary Leadership Academy is a small rural school in Enfield, NC, serving 147 students in grades PK through 5 as part of Halifax County Schools, a district where nearly all students come from low-income households. The school currently ranks in the 13th percentile statewide, which places it middle-of-the-pack among its immediate Halifax County neighbors—above Inborden Elementary S.T.E.A.M. Academy (25th percentile) but below every comparison school from nearby Nash County and Roanoke Rapids City Schools, including Red Oak Elementary (65th percentile) and Manning Elementary School (48th percentile).

Pittman actually beats its own district average in five of seven grade/subject combinations on state tests, but every tested area still trails the state average by 10–25 percentage points. The clearest weakness is 5th grade science, where just 37.5% of students scored proficient in 2025-2026—far below the district average of 49.7% and the state average of 67.7%. This is not a one-year fluke; science proficiency was just 15.8% the prior year. Male students and low-income students, however, rank near the 8th and 9th percentiles respectively.

Nearby schools serving an almost identical poverty profile do much better: Red Oak Elementary reports just 16.5% chronic absenteeism, Belmont Elementary School 21.1%, and M B Hubbard Elementary 27.0%. Pittman also spends a very high $18,006 per student—nearly double what Red Oak Elementary spends—yet gets far weaker results. The school has improved from the 7th percentile in recent years to its current 13th percentile, but with small grade-level cohorts, year-to-year swings should be read cautiously. Attendance and upper-elementary academics remain the most logical focus areas for Pittman going forward.
