Summary

Havelock High is a traditional public high school in Havelock, NC, serving 1,014 students in grades 9-12 within the Craven County Board of Education. The school's clearest strengths are graduation and attendance: 90.2% of students graduated in the latest year, above the state rate of 88.8% and well above the district's 83.5%, and its 17.8% chronic absenteeism rate is far below the statewide 24.2%. Havelock also graduates students at a higher rate than same-district New Bern High (81.8%), and its attendance is among the best in the region, trailing only Croatan High (17.6%) among nearby traditional high schools.

Academically, the picture is more mixed. Havelock's English II proficiency (66.2%) tops both the district (60.0%) and state (64.6%), and its Biology results are essentially at the state average. However, math is a serious vulnerability: just 25.6% of students scored proficient on the Math I End-of-Course exam, the lowest rate among all nearby high schools with reported data and a steep drop from above-average math performance just two years earlier. Math III proficiency (55.9%) also trails the state by 13 points. Overall, Havelock ranks in the 36th percentile statewide, which is stronger than New Bern High (30th) but well behind most surrounding traditional high schools, including Swansboro High, East Carteret High, West Carteret High, Croatan High, and Pamlico County High.

Perhaps most concerning is the breadth of the recent decline. Nearly every major student subgroup at Havelock—African American, White, low-income, Hispanic, and military-connected students—has lost significant ground relative to statewide peers since 2023-2024. Gifted and Talented students rank in the 3rd percentile statewide, an unusually low result that suggests advanced learners may not be adequately challenged. With the student-teacher ratio climbing from 17.9 to 23.1 in just two years, Havelock's leadership faces the challenge of reversing these academic trends while preserving the strong graduation and attendance culture that remains its clearest advantage.
