Rocky River High School is a comprehensive public high school serving roughly 1,562 students in grades 9–12 in Mint Hill, NC, as part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The school has struggled academically for more than a decade, earning a 1-star rating and ranking in the 16th percentile statewide (558th out of 662 North Carolina high schools). That places it well below nearby comprehensive schools like Butler High School (60th percentile) and East Mecklenburg High School (48th percentile). Rocky River also serves an almost universally economically disadvantaged student body, with 99.81% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Rocky River trails state proficiency averages by roughly 14 to 23 percentage points in every End-of-Course subject. Most concerning is Math I, where only 27.7% of students score proficient compared to 42.1% statewide; Biology (38.9%) and Math III (46.4%) also lag well behind. The graduation rate is 82.0%, below the district's 87.9% and state's 88.8%. Chronic absenteeism stands at 40.3% — far above the 24.2% state rate and higher than Independence High School (36.4%), a nearby school with nearly identical poverty levels that ranks at the 35th percentile, more than double Rocky River's ranking. Proficiency improved in every tested subject from 2023–24 to the latest results, with Math III jumping 16.3 points and Biology rising 13.1 points — gains that outpaced statewide improvements and suggest the school is narrowing its achievement gap. Rocky River also posts notably strong comparative outcomes for homeless students, who have earned 4-star ratings for three consecutive years, and multi-racial students, who recently climbed to the 58th percentile. Gifted and Talented students remain a concern at the 17th percentile, though that is an improvement from prior years. Rocky River lacks Intentional Teachers and Administration Staff, they have nothing but a decline in all scores, ranks and major behavior problem .
