East Mecklenburg High School is a large traditional public high school in Charlotte, NC, serving about 2,422 students in grades 9–12 for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. It currently ranks in the 48th percentile of North Carolina high schools — near the statewide middle — though that modest ranking hides some real strengths. Nearly all students (99.88%) come from low-income households, making the school part of a high-poverty cluster east of Charlotte. Its graduation rate is 87.7%, up more than ten points over four years and now nearly identical to district and state averages.

The academic picture is uneven. English II is a genuine bright spot, with 73.5% proficiency — above both district and state averages — and Math III is right around the state average at 68.1%. The weak point is Math I: only 34.1% of students are proficient, well below the state's 42.1%. That pattern sets East Mecklenburg apart. Providence High School, just a few miles away, clears 90% proficiency in most subjects, and Myers Park High School also beats state averages. But East Mecklenburg clearly out-performs its closest high-poverty neighbors: Garinger High School sits in the 13th percentile statewide and Independence High School in the 35th.

Attendance is another dividing line. East Mecklenburg's chronic absenteeism rate of 27.7% is slightly above the district's 26.8% but far better than nearby high-poverty schools like Garinger, where the rate is 55.9%. Subgroup results offer further encouragement: African American, White, and English Language Learner students at East Mecklenburg all rank above the statewide median when compared with similar students across North Carolina. Special education results, however, fell sharply from the 80th percentile to the 48th in a single year — a trend worth watching. Overall, East Mecklenburg appears to do more with less-resourced students than most nearby peers, but low Math I proficiency and chronic absenteeism remain the biggest levers for lifting schoolwide achievement.

This is a very mismanaged school because of the horrid principal. He only cares about his own image with the district and treats teachers who advocate for themselves like complete garbage. The behavior of the students is terrible, and the academics very weak. Do not send your child there. Close Quote
