Garinger High School is a large traditional comprehensive high school in east Charlotte that serves roughly 1,877 students in grades 9–12 through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and virtually its entire student body — 99.8% — comes from low-income households that qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Garinger has spent much of the past decade near the bottom of North Carolina’s high school rankings; in the latest year, it sits in the 13th percentile statewide (578th out of 662 schools, a 1-star rating). Cochrane Collegiate Academy is ahead in every tested subject, and Julius L. Chambers High School leads in Biology and English II, though Garinger posts higher math scores. Magnet schools like Northwest School of the Arts and Williams Secondary Montessori exceed 80% proficiency, but they serve comparatively few low-income students.

The most recent results include real bright spots: Garinger’s graduation rate jumped from 61.1% to 73.0%, and proficiency increased in every tested subject. The school is also comparatively more effective for English Learner students and students with disabilities, and it ranked in the 91st percentile — a 5-star rating — for students experiencing homelessness.
