Cochrane Collegiate Academy

Cochrane Collegiate Academy is an unusual grades 6–12 school within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools that serves 854 students in eastern Charlotte, nearly all of whom come from economically disadvantaged families. Despite steep poverty, Cochrane's graduation rate of 92.5% in 2024-2025 outpaces both the district (84.3%) and state (87.7%) averages, placing it above several larger neighborhood high schools, including Independence High School (86.7%) and Garinger High School (73.0%).

Cochrane also shows genuine academic strength in specific areas. Its Math III end-of-course proficiency reached 78.3% in 2025-2026, comfortably above the state's 68.9% and far higher than Julius L. Chambers High School (42.5%). Statewide rankings for English learner and low-income students are notably strong as well, with low-income students ranking in the 71st percentile. Chronic absenteeism, while still too high at 31.9%, has fallen dramatically from 55.5% four years earlier and is much better than nearby Julius L. Chambers High School (55.7%) and Garinger High School (55.9%).

The biggest concerns are middle-grades proficiency and the school's effectiveness for female students. Roughly one in six eighth graders is proficient in math, a gap of over 36 points below the state average, and eighth grade reading trails the state by about 30 points. English II and Biology proficiency are also well below state averages, meaning the strong graduation rate is not yet matched by college-and-career readiness in these core subjects. At the same time, Cochrane's statewide ranking for female students places it in the bottom fifth of North Carolina high schools, a striking gap in need of investigation. Overall, Cochrane sits in a middle-low position among state high schools, yet it clearly outperforms several of its closest neighborhood peers and demonstrates genuine pockets of success worth attention.
