West Hoke Middle in Raeford, NC, serves roughly 656 students in grades 6–8 within the Hoke County Schools district, a school system currently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina districts. The school itself has a 1-star rating and has seen its state ranking slip from the middle of the pack to the bottom quarter over the last three years, currently placing in the 19th percentile statewide.

The clearest challenge for West Hoke is attendance. More than 38% of its students are chronically absent, a rate far exceeding the district's 28.5% and the state's 24.2%. This is noticeably higher than other local middle schools, including East Hoke Middle (30.8%) and Sandy Grove Middle (26.9%). Academically, the school's math scores are actually above the Hoke County district average, but reading proficiency lags significantly behind state averages in every grade. These outcomes are not simply a result of poverty, since West Hoke's student population (99.5% economically disadvantaged) is nearly identical to that of Sandy Grove Middle, which ranks about 89 places higher. The key differences appear to be attendance and stronger reading and science instruction. Even high-poverty schools outside the district, such as Southern Middle in Moore County, achieve far better results with chronic absenteeism near 22%. West Hoke also spends more per student ($10,848) than several nearby comparison schools. For parents, the data suggests that improving attendance and refocusing on literacy and science instruction would be the most effective strategies for reversing West Hoke's recent downward trend.
