Summary

Johnsonville Elementary in Cameron, NC, is a PK–5 school in Harnett County Schools serving 489 students in a rural area between Fayetteville and Sanford. What makes this school worth a second look is how much its results have improved even though nearly all of its students — more than 99% — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In just a few years, the school jumped from the 13th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools in 2021-22 to the 71st percentile in 2025-26, a 4-star performance and its best showing on record. That climb stands out even more within a district that ranks in the bottom third of the state.

On the most recent end-of-grade tests, Johnsonville beat its district in every tested subject and grade, and beat the state in most of them. The gaps are large: 4th-grade math proficiency was 75.3%, roughly 23 points above the district and 14 points above the state; 5th-grade science reached 77%, 19 points above the district and 9 above the state. The school also gets exceptional outcomes for low-income students and English Language Learners, with both groups ranking in the top 12–13% of schools statewide. Chronic absenteeism has fallen dramatically, from 45% in 2021-22 to 22.3% in 2024-25 — better than both the district and state averages.

Johnsonville is particularly compelling next to nearby schools. Boone Trail Elementary, its closest Harnett County comparison with nearly identical poverty, ranked at the 20th percentile and trails badly in every subject — 4th-grade math is 43.6 vs. Johnsonville's 75.3. Johnsonville also beats Overhills Elementary, Benhaven Elementary, and Highland Elementary in most subjects, even though those schools serve far fewer low-income students. Some caution is warranted: scores swing from year to year because grade-level groups are small, and science jumped 29 points in a single year. But the overall direction — from bottom-quartile to top-third status in four years — points to real, sustained improvement at a school that now outperforms its district by wide margins.

This school is a joke. The teacher's and aids are the worst I've ever seen. And if you have a learning disabled child do not send them to this school. I'm getting ready to pull my child from this school. It's absolutely the worst school by far I've ever seen. Hated giving it any stars. This school needs shut down or looked into by higher ups. This school has been awful. My child entered last year as a 2nd grader. Their was numerous teachers in and out. Each teacher was rude and yelling at the kids a lot. Which did not get any control of the classroom any way. When I contacted several of these teachers for classroom information as well as information for my child to work on skills she missed throughout the year I was told I would get it, and never did. I hired a tutor for the summer who informed me that my child was not anywhere where she needed to be. Their was never homework, spelling words, or reading logs, forget about any projects. It's awful I am looking into changing schools for my child now. I do not recommend sending any child to this school. Close Quote

This school is the worst in terms of leadership, quality of education, safety, staff oh and did I mention leadership?! I have never in my life seen such a horrible place that calls itself a "school". The principal is rude, the ladies in the front office at like they are in high school so catty, the teachers yell at students non stop and my children have suffered, their education has suffered. My children loved school until we moved into this district, they started crying during the week because they don't want to go to JES and these were children who were eager to go at our previous school and I noticed soon after they started that they were not learning. I as a parent had too pick up the slack on weeknights and weekends because they were simply not being taught. My children came from another school where they won a ton of awards for character, achievement as well as community leadership and even they couldn't excel at this school; heaven help the kids who don't excel they will surely get lost along the way. Bottom line... This "SCHOOL" is doing a disservice to the community and public education! These children deserve a decent education with teachers and staff who care; this is sadly not the case at Johnsonville Elementary. Yes, in case you haven't guessed it my children will not be returning next year!My husband and I are now having to pay for private school, but their well being and education is worth it and does not come with a price tag. Please for the sake of your children steer clear of this public institution! Close Quote
