Summary

Broadway Elementary, a K–5 school in the small town of Broadway, North Carolina, serves 490 students and is part of Lee County Schools. About 97% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. After a difficult decade, the school is showing real momentum: its statewide ranking climbed from the 9th percentile in 2023–24 to the 36th percentile in 2025–26, a two-star rating and the school's best ranking since 2021–22. Most nearby schools still rank higher: Tramway Elementary sits at the 89th percentile and Greenwood Elementary at the 77th despite serving similarly high-poverty student bodies, while WB Wicker Elementary (29th) and Boone Trail Elementary (20th) trail Broadway.

The biggest academic warning sign is third grade. Only 47.6% of Broadway third graders were proficient in math in 2025–26, compared with 67.5% across Lee County Schools, and 39.0% were proficient in reading, versus 51.7% districtwide—the lowest third-grade math score among nearby district elementaries. Poverty itself is not the whole story: Tramway Elementary serves nearly identical poverty levels yet performs in the 89th percentile, and Broadway actually spends more per student ($9,542) than Tramway Elementary or Greenwood Elementary. The recent progress shows real capacity for change; sustaining it means strengthening third-grade skills, reducing chronic absenteeism, and targeting the highest-need learners.
