Western Harnett High

Western Harnett High is a traditional public high school in Lillington, NC, serving about 1,324 students in grades 9–12 as part of Harnett County Schools. The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks 528th out of 662 North Carolina high schools, placing it in the 20th percentile statewide. That puts it at the lower end of traditional high schools in the area, below Overhills High (32nd percentile) and Harnett Central High (26th percentile), though comparable to Southern Lee High School.

Still, there are encouraging signs for parents to weigh. Chronic absenteeism has fallen dramatically, from 44.2% in 2021-22 to 22.2% in 2024-25 — now better than both the district rate of 26.9% and the state rate of 24.2%. Nearby Pine Forest High posts a 47.8% absenteeism rate, making Western Harnett’s improvement especially notable. Graduation rates have also climbed, reaching 89.1% before a slight dip to 85.7%, and math stands out as a relative strength: 54.2% of students scored proficient in Math III, ahead of Harnett Central (50.8%) and Overhills (53.5%).

The biggest concerns are in English and science. Only 40.1% of students were proficient in Biology and 48.9% in English II, well below state averages and most neighboring high schools. The school also struggles to serve its most vulnerable learners — students from low-income backgrounds, English learners, and special education students all rank in the bottom 15% of high schools statewide. That is especially significant given that more than 60% of Western Harnett students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The student-to-teacher ratio has also risen to 23.4:1. For parents, Western Harnett provides some real building blocks — improving attendance, solid math results, and a graduation rate that has reached the high 80s — but raising literacy and science achievement, particularly for struggling student groups, will be the true measure of progress ahead.
